2019 Cricket World Cup Final overthrows

Perhaps the most controversial umpiring decision in recent memory occurred in the final over of the 2019 ICC World Cup Final between England and New Zealand. With England needing nine runs from three balls, a throw from the deep ricocheted off the bat of a diving Ben Stokes and went for four overthrows. The on-field umpires awarded six runs in total (two runs completed by the batsmen plus the four overthrows). However, according to the Laws of Cricket, the throw should have been ruled a "dead ball" after the ricochet, and only the two runs that the batsmen had completed before the throw should have been counted. The controversial decision ultimately allowed England to tie the match, which they went on to win in a Super Over.
