No Appeal, No Wicket: This is a fundamental but often overlooked rule. The umpire cannot give a batter out unless the fielding side appeals. Even if a batter is bowled clean through, if no one appeals, the umpire has no authority to make the decision. This is why you'll always hear the fielding side shout "How's that?!" or "Howzat?!"
