The first such instance was Andrew Jordaan in a South African domestic match in 1988, who couldn't reach the ground in time due to flooded roads. Other notable cases include Hemulal Yadav in India's Ranji Trophy in 1997, and West Indian Vasbert Drakes, who was dismissed in a 2002 domestic match because his flight was delayed and he had not yet arrived at the venue when he was due to bat. The dismissal gained global notoriety on November 6, 2023, when Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews became the first player to be timed out in an international match during the Cricket World Cup. This unprecedented incident, which saw him dismissed against Bangladesh after a helmet malfunction caused a delay beyond the two-minute limit, ignited a widespread debate about the "spirit of the game" versus strict adherence to the rules. Just over a month later, Ghana's Godfred Bakiweyem became the second player, and the first in a T20 International, to be dismissed timed out.
